I decided to get some miles in last night by turning up to the open session at Reading Velodrome / Palmer Park
You pay a fiver (if you are honest like me, and don't sneek in the side gate!!!)
The session runs from 8:15 to 9:15 pm.
I started of tentatively, and allowed myself a couple of laps to warm up a little. There was a shocking headwind at the halfway point. Gradually, as more a more riders turned up, a nice fast group started to form. I hitched a toe on the back and then gradually, lap by lap each rider at the front backed off and dropped to the back. After about 20 laps I ended up at the front, only for a short while until I totally bonked.
Being close to the back of another bike, lap after lap, at a good pace is such a buzz.
It was not my first time, and I did better than previous visits in terms of pace and duration.
There was a faster group, probably averaging 25 mph or more. Maybe I will chase them down next time.
A great way to get some safe training in.
