What a minority of Truckers think of us

I've not read all that forum, but it does seem reasonably accurate of my image of truckers some are reasonable chilled out folk and a few others are prats.

Yep, I concur with HLaB, truckers are drawn from a wide range of our society. Many of them will struggle to have any sympathy for cyclists - after all many of them are on timed drops. But a few will take a more considered approach to our sport.

If the cycle paths are in such a shoddy state then why don't the cyclists get off their backsides and sweep them once in a while instead of expecting the council to do it for them? after all....they are getting the cycle lanes provided totally free of charge at other road users expense.

LOOOLLL! If the roads are in such a shoddy state why don't you fill in the pot holes. (hmm, I see someone has beaten me to that on there)

Tempted to sign up and post some of my incidents with some lorry drivers. See if they can condone a minority of lorry driver's behaviour.

From my experience (and I have a fair amount) it is best to ignore this type of forum 'banter'. You can't even be sure that the posters are HGV drivers (remember most folk hide behind an anonymous user name).

I'm actually quite pleased to see some balanced posts earlier on.

I have a completely made up statistic, that despie being completely made up I am 100% certain is true ;):

Online, 80% of are hard men, offline, 0.05% are hard men.

Just a view... on my commute, the most considerate, road-aware drivers are the ones in HGVs. I can understand that there's some frustration across most road users with other groups, but the people driving the big wagons seem to be the ones with most sense of responsibility. This says everything about the importance of the "perception of danger" these people have, and sheer ignorance of this by certain other groups, including some who drive for a living....

Also I think that cycling does need to take a little bit of a look at itself when it comes to group riding, from my experience - for instance, on the weekend at the Forest of Dean sportive where there were times when the bunching and line-crossing was clearly (and perhaps understandably) getting on the locals' nerves. Nothing serious, but then again it all contributes to a perception which comes up in such forums.

On commutes, I can also confirm the majority of HGV's give ample space when overtaking [just a small percentage get a tad too close!].

that's also my experience.

If they've made the effort to get past me I also make the effort to stay behind them unless we enter heavy traffic but even then if they come up again, I'll make the effort to get back out the way, it's just good manners.

Not had a problem with HGV's on my commute, just about everybody else on the road but never HGV's.

I have to be honest, I can count on one hand the number of times I've had an incident with a HGV driver coming too close. Knights of the road I reckon, its Jo Smo the common commuter or chav inna car thats generally the problem.

As a driver(hgv) and cyclist, i see both views on this, from a european point France in particular, both and hgv's are respected on the road. Of which Britain could do well to encourage. Not in my lifetime tho'.
Most drivers cant get passed with oncoming traffic, where as some car drivers would think it ok to 'squeeze'by. I see it a lot.

+1 on HGV drivers normally being very courteous and careful with cyclists.

The absolute worst drivers on the road, IME, are skip-lorry drivers.
