Sounds like jealousy to me there's a lot of people in our area who rarely go further a field than Greenodd and there idea of fun is Asda/Tesco on a Sunday!

When my wife and I go wild canoe camping in winter our colleges think were deranged, mind with the arrival of our little one at Christmas that has ceased but as soon as it warms up she will be out in the canoe and on the back of (my wifes bike ) in a little seat, and no doubt we will be labelled irresponsible too, cant wait.

How do you get the wild canoe to sleep in the tent?

Of course, the life expectancy gain would be more if drivers weren't knocking us down.

And choking everyone with their exhaust fumes.

We have kayaks but with kids tend to only go when it warms up a bit. You're not wrong about how insular it is round here!!

It's the reference to price that always irks me. My BIL has three Volvo's a boat on the water etc etc but considers it silly to spend money on a bike. I sold a pair of wheels recently, one guy who called said "$100, just for the WHEELS" and dropped the phone.

Occasionally you get a comment from a car driver that (even though it doesn't even occur to them) highlights the fact they're ignorant of the rules of the road.
I cycled circa 5 miles to get a haircut (it was winter so I didn't get sweaty).
While sitting there, the girl was chatting and asked how far i'd come...
'5 miles...'
'Ooer, which way did you come...' (by starship ? perhaps she was thinking )
'Down the parkway' (dual carriageway)
She looked shocked and said...
'But you're not allowed to'
'Eh, why's that ?'
'It motorway. you're not allowed on the motorway'
'Its dual carriageway, not motorway'
There then followed a 5 minute convo on the dangers of cycling, do I wear a hemet etc etc.

She was concerned, not judgemental, she just couldn't conceive of riding a bike probably, let alone on a busy road (which wasn't busy when I went there)...

if that's the alternative I'll start driving more and eating whole sticks of butter.
