Well - maybe not that bad. No-one knocked me off but ...

I left this am bright and early (for me) and toddled off to Forth Road Bridge - got to the left hand cycle route and it's shut. Arggghhh.

I cycle back to go under the underpass but I meet a fellow cyclist who tels me you can do a carry under the bridge down and up some steps.

So I cycle back to the bridge - carry the bike - and almost have a heart attack - i have never done cyclo-cross and I wil not be starting.

I then start to get going and start to get into my stride and make up a bit of lost time all is going well until I notice a shimmy like i have a p*ncture.

I check the tyres - both are fine. I carry on and shimmy gets worse.

I get off and have another look and virtually every spoke on the back wheel is really loose on what is a wheel that cost me 80 quid and has only done 100 miles.

Two questions - 1. How does this happen to a wheel? and 2. When do I tell LBS I will never darken their door again?

Apart from that the sun is shining and i will stop being miserable as soon as i decide what to do with this errant wheel.

RE: Two; return the wheel to Local Bike Shop and ask for a repair or a replacment as the goods are not fit for purpose.

That happened to me on a bike I bought from Evans....within 67 miles a lot of spokes had become loose.Game over.

Actually it's the bike im riding presently...it's done 7000 miles now.

Had to buy a new back wheel.

I had that with the rear wheel on my Cadenza, turned out it was because the spokes weren't crossed, just laced straight to the rim. Bought a twenty quid replacememnt from Decathlon which is still going strong on my mountain bike.

I'm really miffed cos the wheel that was on the galaxy had done 5000 miles no probs when a pothole damaged it. The LBS said you could have a like-for-like replacement for 60 quid or a super-dooper wheel for 80.

I went for the 80.

Doh!!!

Like others said take it back to LBS and enforce your statutory rights.

This happened to the Spec Sirrus I bought from Evans (in 2002/3), the spokes in the rear wheel failed twice. 3rd time they fully rebuilt the wheel with Sapim spokes that has survived to this day remaining as straight and true as the day it was built.

Opting for an £80 wheel over a £60 one.

The problem with LBSs is that they're mostly road cycling orientated. They focus too much on performance and less on durability.

I went to quite a few. I made my requirements (commuting) very clear - and yet, they were still selling me thin wheeled carbon race machines.

In the end I did my own research and bought a 26" hybrid off the net.

Spoke to LBS. They were pleasant and professional and said if I brought the wheel in they'd rebuild it.

I will see how that goes.

Quick update - wheel rebuilt absolutely fine and dandy.

Also - I had a front p*ncture which they fixed for me including replacing the rather aged rim-tape and only changed me for a new tube.

LBS now back in good books. I now have to change the cantilevers. Does bike fettling every cease?

Thought not !!
