What a waste

The road outside Drago Towers is a bit of a state. The potholes are so bad some of the neighbours have emigrated to Beirut where the roads are better.

Anyhoo, the Carncil must have finally cottoned on to this and duly dispatched a man with an aerosol of white paint, and he spent a few hours drawing a nice white ring around every pothole. We were excited with the expectation that any day now another man with a bucket of pothole filler will turn up and finish the job. Huzzah!

Except...

4 months on and no one has turned up to fill the holes, and so much time has passed the painted markings have been almost entirely rubbed away and obliterated.

What a waste of time and money. Surely the pothole fillers, when they eventually send them some time next century, aren't so thick that the can't spot a hole for themselves and do the deed without a man showing the way with white paint? It's bad enough they waste money hiring the man with the white paint, but to employ him and then ignore his markings is just frivolous. I suggest the council just cut out the middle man and put white paint mans salary in a wheelbarrow and torch it.

What other waste of public money have you spotted lately?

Many years ago I had a temporary job counting potholes and general road damage. M.A.R.C.H. is what it was called I think. You wouldn't believe all the stages to getting a nasty hole in the road repaired.

I did see two fellas a few weeks ago. One was digging a hole and carefully checking the depth with a rod. There was a brief pause and then his mate would fill it in. At a loss I wandered over and asked them what it was all about.

Ah, said the first man, we're tree planter for the council. I dig the hole and check it is big enough, Dave puts the tree in the hole and holds it steady whilst Trevor fills in the hole around the tree.

Trouble is Dave is on holiday this week.

I reported a local pothole on NCN 7 to "fill that hole" , and to their credit, a few days later it was filled in. Only the actual hole I reported though, despite it being surrounded by other equally dangerous holes within a few feet .

The chap opposite my drive has let his hedge grow so long that you cannot even see his Department Of Environment van parked behind it most days and nights.
Do you mean environment agency .....?

They have done it on purpose to stop people claiming for damaged wheels or injury.

Once a pot hole however small or large I may be has had the special paint around it then the council will politely tell you where to go should you try and make a claim.

Now I am not sure where you would stand after 4 months but I am sure in the event of damage or injury you could argue that sufficient time has passed for repairs to be made.

We had the yellow paint on my road a few years ago and sometime later (weeks I think) it did annoy me that they never sprayed the biggest 15 inch pothole, so I reported it and 72 hours later they came and did it and about five or six others.

Not leafblowing season yet though, Drago...

Surely it would have exactly the opposite effect in the event of a claim? The fact they have sprayed paint around it proves that they were aware of it but have neglected in their duty to do something about it.

I quite enjoy going on www.fixmystreet.co.uk and reporting all the potholes with white circles around them.

Especially once they've been there a few weeks. Reports usually start "It appears that someone painted a circle around the pothole at xxx several weeks ago and then forgot to come back and fill it in".

They're usually sorted within a week*

* - except in Leeds, where the council refuse to accept highways defect reports via fixmystreet
