Just been to the funeral of a close friend and cycling nut. On the 17th of July Bernie was cycling along the Sutrans cycle path just outside of Lincoln, he would have been giving it some wellie, he always did, when he suffered a fatal heart attack and. I am sure this is the way out he would have wanted, and would certainly smiled about it.

Now Bernie had a great sense of humour and this I am sure showed itself at the funeral when somebodies phone rang during a quiet moment, this would have had him smiling for sure.

If somebody is waiting up there for him they will not have to wait long if he is on his bike, as he only had one speed, flat out.

Yes but it just isn't fair that someone who looks after themselves like your friend did dies from a heart attack while fat slovenly body abusers live to a good age.
Maybe we push ourselves too much and should slow down when we get older?

I will try to find the source, but I recall that endurance athletes are at greater risk of heart failure than overweight people. Something to do with an extremely low resting heart rate, so slow that it can fail.

I reserve the right to have made that up in my head while I go and search for the source though

The body doesn't work like that. Some fat lazy people live longer than some fit active people.

You won't necessarily live longer if you excersize and eat properly but your chances of living longer are increased.

I believe my late grandfather, although not a racer or anything, went a similar way. Riding home from town, got as far back as the end of his road, dismounted, carefully laid his bike down on the verge, and dropped dead.

Tommy Godwin lasted until he was 91. Beryl Burton was just 59.

However both were pretty fit until just before they died.

His brother and father both unfit I believe died younger.
