I used to like what we called hard rock, and punk.

Most of it now grates on me.

I remember John Peel speculating if, say, a Led Zep fan graduated to Val Doonican with advancing age.

I've not gone that far, but I now prefer the Carpenters to Iron Maiden.

You can still like them both.

I've always been a fan of British metal like Maiden, Saxon, Judas Priest, and Motorhead. Now though I don't mind a bit of easy listening like Sinatra and the rest of the rat pack style of music.

I often wonder(*) if Radio 2 would end up playing the sex pistols and such as the punks of yesterday got to that certain age.

(*) I have a lot of unused mental capacity at times.

Mazzy Star - Among My Swan.

I've been listening to that album regularly since I bought it 15 years ago, and never tire of it.

Yesterday Ghost released their third album Meliora. I think it's so good that I'm now listening to it for the fifth time in two days! Earlier this Muse released Drones and Faith No More released Sol Invictus, both of which I similarly played over and over because I liked them so much.

This got me thinking about other albums that have had a similar effect on me. There haven't been that many. Slayer's Reign In Blood, Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon and Herbie Hancock's Headhunters are three that string to mind.

Has this year been that exceptional for music? What albums have you had this experience with?

Public Service Broadcasting..... Race for Space....I played it constantly. Also. Mumford and Sons new one

You're right, they aren't mutually exclusive. My dad was a massive Sinatra fan. It rubbed off. I was listening to Sinatra and classical before I discovered metal.

Madman Across The Water - Elton John

Amongst the first Albums I owned and played to death.

Edit: there used to be a time when I would have several of the albums in the top 40, I haven't owned an album that's charted for years, I'm getting old.

Apart from the Squarepusher one, that looks like a trawl through my collection there! On that basis, I'm going to get 'Hard Normal Daddy' right away as our tastes seem strikingly similar.
"This is Squarepusher" is worth a listen too - I think you can preview both over on youtube.
