depends on how much you spend. wiggle have some titanium ones for under £20 a pair, some mavic ones that are a mix of stainless steel and composite materials for £25 each etc.

i suspect (although i'm no metallurgist) that mild steel would be too weak given that the skewers are long and thin. i'll defer to anyone of superior knowledge of the subject who knows different tho'.

I doubt there are any mild steel ones but Chromoly or Titanium seem to be the most common materials used!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
