What are some good rear racks out there?

I have a rack with adjustable legs on my commuter bike because the eyelets are in some weird high position. I wouldn't recommend adjustable legs for any normal bike.
Generally you get racks in two leg lengths, for MTB and for Hybrid/touring bikes but there is no standard.
I like about 3cm of clearance between rack and mudguard so I can lash down big loads. Too much clearance can place the weight higher than necessary but can also provide more heel clearance.
I like the adjustable stays to the seatstay to be as short as possible and level with the rack to maintain triangulation. Downward sloping stays compromise the stiffness of the structure.
3 legs good, 2 legs bad unless you travel ultralight. Also a rear lamp bracket, open framework top and no special mounting rails.
Some racks play badly with typical modern quick release systems!
Tubus racks are all excellent and the benchmark for tourists.

Hi Lauris,
I had exactly the same question.
The answer I found for the Mountain bike is the Thule Pack n Pedal Tour rack.
And for the gravel bike the best is the Tubus Cargo. If you don't have mounting eyes, you can add a seatpost clamp with eyes.

I wrote about exactly this problem in a new (hobby) blog that I started: it's here along with photos of my install on both bikes

Hi All

In my previous thread, I asked about pannier bags but now I need to find a really good pannier rack.

It needs to fit all kind of bikes 29ers/Road bikes/gravel/cyclocross etc.

I bought this one last week tried to put it on but tyre clearance was a bit worrying at only about 0.5cm-1cm.

Today I had a look at this one:

Anyway I need a rack that will fit any bike and have good clearance.

The Tubus evolved logo is a work horse. If you look carefully, You can get it for lower then $100

Axiom Journey Uni-Fit claims to fit most bikes - comes with different mounts and choice of fixing holes £20 now from this ebay seller

Universal fit or adjustable racks are good for odd bikes but if you have rack eyelets in a standard position, simpler racks are stronger, stiffer and more reliable.

Indeed. Multiple fastenings create weak spots and increase likelihood of breakage.

I have 2 of these available if you're interested, 1 has been used a little £12 posted, or the other brand new never even fitted £15

I have a Tubus Cargo, I don't like it, I had to modify the panniers to fit. I don't like black paint either, it looks scruffy when it chafes off. Given the choice, I'd have another Dawes one like the one that came on the bike.
