Cyprus is very nice at the moment. Winter is over, the place isn't crowded yet and the days are longer because of last Sunday's time shift. :okay:

How does a Greek Island thread turn into a discussion on Cyprus? Geography gone mad. Anyway I'm going to Kos this year, 2 weeks in June. I've not sampled Kos yet, looking forward to it. ^_^

Because it's an island and they speak Greek.

I suspect if you want old style traditional Greek surroundings, you'll need to travel to get to it. Many holiday resorts now are towns that have built up for the trade and have lost their charm.
Mentioned up post was kefalonia, we went a couple years ago to Argostoli. Good holiday, lovely away from the town itself...don't get me wrong the town was fine as a base but no charm, but the day trip drive up to Fiskardo shows what's been lost, peace and quiet, acres of charm and more traditional villages. One of the best meals I ever had on holiday was at a taverna half way, the owners were amazed English people had stopped and treated us to a simple but perfect meal...complete with a plate of slow burning coffee powder to keep the insects away. Something about it was perfect.
Kos, small, ok, Kos town is lovely and quaint the rest is just meh , ok.
Crete, much preferred the Lasithi plateau end, but Malia, Stalis and Hersinossos are a bit mental. Rhethymnon I just didn't really like but if you day trip down to the south western spot of Elafonnisi, there a shallow beach there that's just magical with virtually nothing else, a sandwich bar and somewhere to get a drink...Isolated and lovely.
But that's my preferences, we will walk half a day in heat and enjoy the peace and quiet, small villages, quiet coastline and an odd local taverna where many other holidaymakers would prefer the Greek equivelents of Blackpool and a Maccy D.
All inclusive Cancun this year but next year I want to get back to basics, a Greek self catering holiday, buy local food, eat simple and enjoy.
