A recent buy from Oxfam: boxed set
of Bruckner's symphonies, albeit lacking "0" and "00". Though genuinely beautifully played with a great sense of line and pace the first three are kind of a trial run to my ears, though with some great moments, if a bit bombastic. No 4 he really gets going and it's rather good.
Anyhow am now getting into this set, conducted by Barenboim, "the cat in the hat" edition as one wag put it based on the cover photo.

I do very much like Bruckner's masses but didn't really know his symphonies though have heard the odd one or two

I’m a fan of his seventh, which I think is up there with Mahler at his best.

Hi all - New music from Pulp and The Divine Comedy - they're both really good, especially The Divine Comedy (I love him so much and this is a proper Divine Comedy song). High hopes for the albums from both, and both on tour later this year.

Shirley Bassey. An article in The Guardian pinged me.

I 'discovered' The Tragically Hip in 1991 on the Interstate 95 near Boston, USA. It was a 'living in history' moment for me, like the time the waitress in a San Francisco diner asked me 'more coffee honey?'. A 'wow, this really happens' moment, an obvious reality, a real-life cliche even... or somesuch. The song was Cordelia, the rest is not for here.

The song above, from 1992, was a later 'find'. Influenced by, and referenced to, Hugh MacLennan - a Canadian writer. The song quotes liberally from his novel 'The Watch That Ends The Night'. It is without doubt one of the best novels I have ever read. A big themed, literary giant of a novel with prose to match.

Edit: the song also features in my perhaps favourite ever film; Atom Egoyan's 1997 The Sweet Hereafter. Maybe I was meant to be Canadian.
