Sitting on the bike and pedalling, just like summer but with more clothes and luggage that doesn't take on water so readily. And spiked tyres when it's icy. Or waiting until it thaws later in the day. And not being afraid to abandon leisure rides if it's no fun, but that's rarer than one might think.

Probably - there's all sorts of strange people cycling too ;)

Could you motivate enough of them into still doing other rides in winter?
Maybe, I'll have to try :okay:

reduce the amount of riding I do over the winter, as I don't want to wear out my bike before next summer,
Bikes wear out in summer too, my summer tour bike has had quite a number of components replaced over the years:smile:.

I still get out as much as I can however evening rides are replaced by Turbo Sessions and when the weather is really mucky I do more off road riding either on the MTB or CX.

Nice dry cold mornings are great for riding especially with a good coffee stop half way round.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I don't like the rain or snow, so as long as both stay away and there is no frost or ice on the road, then i will get out. Admittedly not as much as in the Spring or Summer, but there are some really nice winter days and i will make the most of them.

I've got a couple of days off later this week and I need to spend an hour or three getting the alu road bike (with mudguards) and the hybrid back ready for use.
Neither have been used in an age - April for the road bike and (shamefully) the day before Xmas Eve last year for the hybrid, so there will be a bit of fettling required then I'm good to go.
And once I've cleaned and fettled it, I can find a warm corner to tuck the carbon bike away until next spring ;)
I don't mind the cold - it's just a matter of getting the layers right and I reckon that there is another winter to be had from the Roubaix bib tights I got from Lidl and buying my first pair of overshoes proved to be a revelation - who knew you could have warm feet on a winter ride?
I'm in the half century challenge so need to get that finished and as a New Years Day half century has become a bit of a tradition I guess I'll be doing the challenge again next year. ^_^
I might have to moderate my routes a bit - a few of my favourite lanes get clogged with mud through the winter and don't see enough motorised traffic to shift it, but there are still plenty of other ways to get about.

Time you enjoyed wasting was not wasted
I bought a Ribble Winter Audax a few months ago, so I will be using it throughout the winter months and putting my white Giant, which has no mudguards, away. I am also going to get my old Rockhopper sorted out so that I can use it on a local off road trail when time is tight as it only takes an hour to get round it. I'll also continue to use the hybrid for commuting.

Like several others on here, I avoid ice if possible, it didn't used to worry me until I fell off a couple of years ago and hurt myself, but wind and rain, within limits, won't deter me, and some of those dramatic late afternoon sunsets, wild scenes and blustery days in the winter are great to experience, as are the crisp, dry ones.

My only two crashes in the last 9 years of cycling have both come on black ice. Won't be riding when there is ice about. Other than that, my favourite conditions are clear, sunny, crisp days when the temperature is between 3 and 10 degrees. Will just carry on riding the same bike as I do for the rest of the year.

A winter ride from a few years ago, I'm looking forward to more rides like this one.
