Hi guys,

I’m a complete cycling novice and don’t really understand any of the terms so please could any replies be in layman’s terms.

Right, I’m looking for a bike to be used primarily as a training tool, with the use being split into about 80% road and 20% slightly rougher tracks. A friend suggested getting a road bike but putting thicker hybrid tyres on it.

Any thoughts or ideas on what sort of bike or any particular model would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Big Dan.

Hi,

If you must use rougher tracks then I think a pure road bike will not suit you, as most proper road bikes seem to have tyres limited to about 25mm.

You should have a look at cyclo cross type bikes, not only will they be able to take wider tyres, but the frames are also beefed up a bit to take the rough too.

Although there are many bikes like this, I would suggest looking at the specialized tricross.
