What bikes should I consider

I need a bike that will

  • Not mind too much about doing thousands of miles strapped to a motorhome bike rack in all weather.
  • Strong enough to do a LOT of very bumpy tracks, footpaths
  • Be able to carry my 16 stone, 18stone when I have a rucksack full of shopping.
  • Have racks that will carry a further 30lbs or so when doing the 'big shop' and a granny gear to even out the hills
  • When not carrying a load, it needs to be fast and fun on the road; I don't like to hang about and hate spinning out on big descents.
  • Because I have lost half a thumb and half of the first two fingers on my left hand I find the travel required to change gear, when the lever is integral with the brake lever, is too long and makes quick changes difficult. Bar end would be OK as are regular mountain bike levers.

My present bike is a very old aluminium Orange e something with XTR shifters, it's done a good job, could have done with a rack and it's on its last legs. I've been thinking that a tourer with 26inch wheels might suit, what do you think?

Budget?

For tourers, perhaps have a chat with Spa in Harrogate. Assuming you are in the UK

Rides a Pinnacle Arkose 3 and a Trek Emonda SL6
As anyone who has read any of my threads will know I have been impressed with my Pinaccle Arkose 3. The 2015 Arkose 2 is similar but has bar end shifters and Hydraulic disc brakes. You would need to test ride it to see if the fastest gear is enough for you same with the price.
