Hugh Laurie's 'The Gun Seller' is my book at the mo.

VERY funny, but seems to lack a plot. It is his only book to date: 1996.

Reading a (modern) history book "when the lights went out" by Andy Becket - about the 70s - which is when I was growing up. Picked it up in a charity shop, but since noticed it had very mixed reviews on amazon. First 50 pages in, and Ted Heath is PM - reads very well, rings true to my memory and what I've learnt since - and so far I'm rather impressed. It's proper history with references and so on, so does seem solid. Recommended - least based on the first bit.

Currently reading "Sleepwalkers" by Christopher Clark, a professor of history at Cambridge University. It is an account of the lead up to the first world war. It delves into the complexities of Balkan politics going back several years before 1914, and explains how the various alliance agreements obliged European nations to come to each other's aid and also to oppose each other.

For several years I have wanted to know more about how the "Great War" came about; I knew it was not simply just about Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination in Sarajevo. This book certainly tells you more - much, much more, the detail is amazing and as a result you really need to concentrate to keep track. It is written by a very accomplished academic, and I suspect would be an excellent academic source for someone studying this historic event. An excellent read, meticulously researched, but requires real application and concentration.

I enjoyed that although IIRC it dribbles out a bit at the end. When you have finished it, try Stephen Fry's "The Stars' Tennis Balls" - a reworking of the Count of Monte Cristo, but very well done. Quite a lot better than The Gun Seller.
