@fossyant external to cabinet about the same as us.
The speed of the computer shouldn't make a great deal of difference, even on a 100Mbs network you should get the speed you quoted, (but more bandwidth is always better), I don't know very much about wireless protocols as I really hate wireless, but what your saying is your getting more speed on wireless than you are wired. You can get cat5 couplers i.e. plug one jack in one side and the other the otherside they are pretty cheap, might be using one on our network, its a while since in installed it all, its 1Gb to all rooms bar one and thats 100mbs, plenty for most things (the reason is its only a Cat5 cable, and not a Cat5e or 6) 4 upstaires bedrooms what is no a nursery was wired till the other half just cut it at the wall, in the lounge there is her comp, the T.V. and the Youview box (or what ever it is) the latter two share 100Mbs switch box behind the T.V. a couple of ports free if a laptop needs to be hardwired. however there is only mine in use and the O.H. on the wired network, youngsters use the wireless and then complain when its slow, last time I tested in this room it was something like 25-30Mbs. From the modem, (the white box not sure if they call it that but performs the same function) to the router from the Gb port on there to the Gb switch that feeds to the T.V. the O.H. and to another Gb switch box upstairs, from which the upstairs bedrooms are fed.
