My old estate car is due an MOT and there are some expensive bits need doing, so I may have to throw it away and buy something else.

Knowing from these pages that I will turn into a road monster if I pick the wrong make, can I please have some recommendations for cars that will reflect my reputation as a safe and caring driver?

Choose one that tends to steer to the left on motorways, keeping the middle lane free.

Buy another of the same estate or the updated version. If you were ok with it before why not again. Or does the fact that you did not disclose the make and model of the old one mean that it was a petrol guzzling grass ripper of a car?^_^

Gosh, this thread is a minefield.

The serious reply: Only buffoons and the terminally dull generalise about drivers according to the vehicle they drive. Any car, well driven, fits the bill. The last time I was SMIDSY'd, it was by a sweet little old lady in a 207. She was very nice to me as I lay waiting for the ambulance - and I rang her later to reassure her that I was OK. I've never been knocked off by an Audi, BMW or large 4x4.

The practical reply: Something with a lot of glass and keep that glass clean. Something with good mirrors and nice, bright, clear indicators. Something comfortable because the less you have to think about an aching back, the better you'll drive.

The puerile reply: Just stick a cycle rack on the roof and a Saxo Bank sticker on the back and cyclists will think well of you.

I may well buy the same again. I didn't say what I drive in case this might categorise my current driving style.

How much does it cost to Oldham?
But I've only got one.

Ooher! That comment may generate a lot of angry rebuffs from certain posters here. Or maybe not!

Shouldn't that rear light be red?
