I'm another very happy Skoda Octavia owner.

I have had my 1.9TDi estate in Elegance trim from new since 2001 and have had no significant issues with it. The issues I had were with the local dealer servicing so I have sacked them and now use a garage that makes cars better rather then worse.
I would recommend one for longevity, reliability, economy and for being a great work horse. I can chuck anything in the back and it will pull a 1.3ton trailer about all day long in town and on motorways. I usually get better then 50mpg in town, 62mpg on my commute and between then 40-45mpg towing.
The only thing lacking in mine is cruise control and rear legroom.

I would be tempted to replace it with a Skoda Superb Estate and I would look for a 4x4 diesel version for more stability when towing. A torque converter would be good too but I'm not sure if the auto has a lock up clutch in it.

I might just convert my Octavia to electric if it ever dies, no sign of that happening anytime soon as it has only 160,000 miles on the clock, nearly all at motorway speeds.

Dare i ask which dealer you had problems with ?? You should be able to retro-fit cruise to your car by the way.Must admit i prefer your shape of Octavia to the new ones and Elegance spec was just right.

Skoda Yeti? European Car of the Year. Very, very reliable by all accounts and brilliantly executed.
OR...a Mitsi L200 Trojan, like mine :bravo:

It is the elegance trim that I am thinking about which now includes cruise control. I test drove the renault megane sport tourer (fancy term for an estate) yesterday and got one lined up for the mazda 6 on Tuesday.

The extra's that are as standed on the octavia compared to most others still means it is way out in front and unless the Mazda blows me away then my mind is made up.

I used to one of those who said that I would never be seen dead in a Skoda after their Lada Riva clones of the 80's.

I could have guessed this was a cycling forum even if I didn't know. To every 'what car' thread on here a chunk of the responses always relate to how many bikes you can get in the back, followed by mentions of reliability, comfort, economy.
Glad everyone has their priorities right.

Trust me the old Skuds were brilliant for reliability even if they were somewhat strange and lacking in fancy extra's and i had to grow and extra hard shell to stop myself launching into arguments about my choice of transport ! Go for the Skoda, you won't be dissapointed especially in Elegance trim.

So true ! I have two cycle carriers at the moment because i can get the little ones bikes and buggy in the rear of my VW Touran but there will come a time when i will either need more roof mounted ones of those that strap to the back. Before anyone questions why i do not have a Skoda now it's because they do not build a 7 seater which is a pity but i can always say it's an Octavia underneath !!!!

A bunch called claybank.
Crazy thing is that I bought a lot of old bangers from then over the years and never had a problem so I decided to get my first ever new car from them on the basis of trusting a family run firm.
The first thing they got wrong was the 'last straw' that I found wrong.

I wanted towing electrics from new and it was only years later when I was fixing the trailer with fog lights that I found they had connected both sidelights to one circuit instead of two and the fog lights were on the other sidelight circuit. Risking blowing fuses from overloading the circuits and leaving me with no lights at all. They also cut all the cables so short that I had to extend them to fix it and used 'Scotch' connectors instead of the proper plugs into the loom.

I still have a remaining hand print 'eaten' into the tailgate that still hasn't been resprayed. Couldn't trust them to do it without something else going wrong.

I must admit that over the whole time that I was a customer their showroom, parts ordering and service booking staff were always excellent. It was just the appalling mechanincs carrying out their work that were beyond shoddy and the management never did anything about despite all the problems I reported back to them. Their condoning of that level of work was worse then the poor level of work itself.

I'm not going to retro fit cruise control there are too many bits to change for the factory set up and I'm not keen on the aftermarket controls.

Also, I have now finally managed to break the lumbar support in the driver's seat. I've probably spent more hours in that seat then on the sofa at home so it has lasted well.

Know them well ! Got made redundant from Gorners in Warrington when they went bump and spent a "joyfull" year working for those clowns !! There level of service shocked me especially after coming from Gorners who were so professional.I work in parts and their "parts dept" was in the shed where they service cars down the road in Eccles,it was a dump ! Also spent many years at Parkside in Bolton, they do have a good name even if it does look olde worldy and the service is more family orientated.I now work with what i call fast Skoda's in the shape of Porsche's....thankfully a long way from the Claybank rubbish !
I am sure you could buy a genuine Skoda retro-fit for cruise but has been a while since i had my hand in with Skoda.

They weren't much better when their workshops were behind the show room in sight of the managers. Even their own showroom staff admitted it was bad but nothing they could do about it if the management didn't want to know.

I now use Murt's near Hebden Bridge. Excellent service and never any problems. They also accept home baked cakes in gratitude.

Are they a new dealer, never heard of them. When i left dealers were going under including Horners and of course Gorners.Parkside just seems to plod on but they have binned new car sales and just became an authorised repair and warranty dealer but they never have any bad press.Claybank managment were nasty people, two owners who just wanted as much out of everyone for little reward,so glad i am away from them.
If you ever buy a Porsche then cakes will go down well here aswell !

Murt's is just a good independent garage.

Sorry, this has got a little OT.

The other car options could be the Renault Kangoo (there will be an electric option shortly). Mondeos estates have huge capacity, wide tailgate and the wheel arches don't intrude too much.

The Yaris Verso came a close second when I opted for the Skoda.

My other half loves his volvo v70, cannot say a bad word about it.

I personally find it a bit too large, but is great for fitting a bike in the back I must admit.

at your mileage I would be thinking diesel.

I'd also factor in how many years you want to keep the car for, and what gadgets you want.

Nissan are always good for loading cars with gizmos - we had a primera which had a fab reversing camera, really cool.
