It depends whether you have wide or narrow sprockets on there. Either one matched with the wrong chain will be noisy.
The applicable widths are 1/8" or 3/32".
 
I have used 1/8 and 3/32 singlespeed chains and don't see much difference. Availability of half-links is probably more important.
I did try using Sturmey Archer sprockets and they need thinning down a smidgon with coarse emery paper to fit the hub. I went back to using the thinner Shimano sprockets and thinner chain.

Shimano say you should use 9sp chains. I do as my other bikes are all 9sp so I've always got spare.

Other people use single speed chains and I also did for a while. Because single speed chains are slightly wider they run a little noisy on the genuine Alfine chainring and cog. If you're running generic chainrings and rear cog you should be ok with a singlespeed chain.
