metal note to self... don't use Dr bike as they talk a load of shite

No I fully recommend the mechanic- brilliant job done.

Raised an issue regarding the BB which I am burying my head in the sand about at the moment...

Can't remember the last time I used the small ring - I did try to use it the other week on a particularly steep hill, only to find the shifter was knacked and it wouldn't move down. It could have been like that for some time.

I always ride in the large chainring on the flat, usually 53-17, unless I'm struggling against a strong headwind. I even stay in the large chainring going up hill although I might change down a bit at the back. For me to use the small chainring I either have to be going up a steep hill or struggling against a strong headwind on the flat.

Middle 39 for me mostly on the flat. Small 30 for hills most of the time. I've only deliberatly used the big 50 a couple of times when going downhill and I wanted to maintain a good speed in traffic.

I'm just about to return to a 53/39 setup on the road, as in all the time that I owned my previous (compact equipped) bike I used the small chainring on about five occasions. Two of those were to keep pace with the people I was riding with. Being lightweight makes the bigger gears much easier to turn.

I spend most of my time riding fixed, 46x18, on the geared bike I have 50/42 on the front and 12-27 on the back, I ride small ring nearly all the time, will only use the big ring downhill with a tail wind. These days I ride a top end in the 18-22mph range and average 15-16mph.

Barnet,
Always in the big ring on the flat. I have a 12-25 cassette and would use the 15/16 rings most of all.

I generally ride in the biggest gear that feels reasonably comfortable, and drop down if the hills get a bit steeper, or if I have to stop for lights and stuff.
