My commuting has been slow off the mark since the poor weather so looking at 4 days this week (25 mile round trip each day).
My question is how do you decide if/ when to go hard? Part of me at the moment is holding back knowing I have 2.5 commutes left, but I know by Friday afternoon my legs will be tired as funk so won't be able to go hard then either.

Or should I just save my hard riding for times when I don't have a lot to get through and just concentrate on doing the journey?!

Dunno what is hard for you but I generally will go as hard as I can most days on the commute. However if I was involved in club runs at weekends I think my view would change and would have some rest days. Your body in the end will tell you when it has had enough. Remember it is after all a commute and not a time trial unless you treat it as such

Days when you leave the house, the sun is shining, the wind is gentle and not against you and you had a good evening the night before, chatting with your friends over a pint or two. On those days I go hard.

Also days when you leave slightly late, but still need to get somewhere on time. I used to do this deliberately.

When I'm not commuting at rush hour. Filtering near the end of my journey always adds a couple of minutes to the journey compared to none.

Bad weather days for me just to get the commute over with and also to generate some heat (this p****s off work idiots who say "bit cold/wet for a bike ride my heater was lovely and warm" and then you take off your hat. gloves and unzip your coat loudly announcing "gor I'm sweating cobs mate, what's that you say eh!" For me sunny days are for pootling about trying to resist cycling past work and pulling a sickie to ride 45-50 miles to my all time favourite pub ( The Bulls Head Monyash - pick up cycle route 6 back of Whitwick to Derby-fast dual carriageway to Ashbourne-then the Tissington trail to within a couple of back lane miles from Monyash.) Takes me about 4 hrs with stops to admire some views/scoff a bacon, egg and mushroom bap in Derby etc. Heaven:bicycle:
