need to replace this freehub. I thought it was going to be a normal hex wrench affair, but its not. Its also not a torqx either.

can someone tell me what I need to get this off without being violent towards it?

10mm allen key is what you need.
10mm is too small, 12 too big. so it is allen then? must be an 11 which i dont have. Ill go on the hunt.

will a shimano freehub fit?

It will be an allen key - it's just a matter of which size. If 10 is to small (have you tried one?) and 12 is too big, that leaves 11mm or 7/16"

It's common to have 12 points on hex to give more flexibility in key/spanner positioning.
Most obviously on ring spanners

You can get sockets for these. Usually call them triple square or ribe sockets at work. They come in various sizes like hex keys and usually sized with "M10" "M12" etc always starting with "M".
