Winter bike.

Then you'll want a 'bad weather' bike to protect the winter bike.

etc.

etc.

Then you turn into me/others and have so many you lose count

And if you sell it, don't start wondering what happened to it: one of my old winter bikes came up on eBay recently. Now I'd not treated it well but had maintained it and sold it in decent condition. However the on eBay ad it looked scraped, the wheelset wrecked, etc. :cursing:

My most recent road bike is a compact but #2 is a triple which has some nice low gearing with the granny ring. I use #2 for rides which are going to have steep hills. Also, it has rack mounts which are handy if I want to do some very mild touring. I'm keeping it for practical rather than sentimental reasons.

Hey guys, had a new roadie last week, carbon frame, 105 setup.

My old bike is here, alu with sora setup - I was windering what others tended to do with their old bikes once getting a new one.

Dunno whether to sell on, keep as a rough and tumble bike of swap out wheels and pedals and make a bit of an all purpose hybrid setup

I heard about a charity that wanted old road bikes for people to use in Malawi ....so my old Raleigh Solo bike was collected made road worthy and sent to Africa where I hope its getting well used

You should keep your old bicycle. I use some of my bikes as dedicated commuters/light tourers. I have a couple of commuters, one with fenders, one without. You never know when friends may visit, and need to borrow a steed from your stable. Just a myriad of reasons to keep it. Beside the fact that you only have two bicycles. You probably need four bicycles total.

The problem is that you need somewhere to stash them. #2 and #3 live slung from the ceiling at work while #1 lives in the hall at home. Without the space at work, some severe austerity measures would have to be taken.

Quite true. I am the exception to the rule in the States, where you are supposed to have an automobile for each and every family member. So I have a spare space in my garage for the second car, which accommodates the bicycles and a lot of other storage nicely.

I already have a dedicated commuting bike. Also I can't think of anyone I know who'd visit who could get onto my bike without a ladder ^_^

My son would never let me sell my Defy. He is egging me on to save up for a new carbon-framed bike so that he can get his leg over the Defy !

This thread reminded me I have an old hybrid that is just taking up valuable space in the spare room, looked around locally for cycle charity tyle places last night and found one just a few miles away.
Will drop it in to them over the weekend and let them sell it on :okay:

This also means I have room for one more bike so not entirely selfless

pub bike or fixie . Otherwise give it away as there's not a lot of point of n+1 unless they serve a different role. Also, at least from my experience, you tend to have two badly maintained bikes rather than gaining a usable spare

sometimes i wish I'd kept my old bike for use in wintry days etc but it was well past its best and gave me good service so i thought it deserved to have a bit of sunshine in Africa
