You don't see friendly cyclists nowadays who wave to you as they pass with a cheery greeting:sad:.

IanUK can explain why that is.

What I don't miss is seeing dead voles and crows hung on fencing.
I saw a gamekeeper's gibbet quite recently on a walk in Buckinghamshire. It was a large bush entirely festooned with de-composing small mammals and birds. Since we had recently passed a notice that warned us that we were on private land, and as it was strangely silent, I did wonder if we were about to enter The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
I kid you not a while back I was up the top of one of the valleys and there was a bridge down that forced me to cut through a farm steading to use their bridge, I passed an open barn in the steading and between every post there was a dead crow or rook in various states of decomposition hanging by a pieces of bale twine, just disturbingly swaying back in forth in the breeze. The farmers wife then appeared asking my business, smart fit looking woman who then offered me tea and cake, lovely cake it was too (maybe overdone a bit on the icing but i didn't say) never asked her about all the swinging corvids either, I guess there was a reason, probably some form of madness, a lot of people up the valleys are in various states of barking - too much fresh air i guess, best not to think too deeply about what is going on.
The movement of the part dead bird keeps others away. It dies they then feed on it.
Fresh one then required.

There's still some quite shocking ageism round here. I feel a whole load of offense washing over me.

Sometimes the farmers and gamekeepers are separate. The farmer may be renting the farm from a large landowner and the gamekeeper working for the landowner. I'm not supporting the disgusting ritual . It is just that you can find some decent farmers at times.
I think the first and last time I saw birds hanging from a gibet was in the ,60's at an Agricultural school.

Kinda the opposite of the thread title (rather than just drifting OT) but I was in Basingstoke yesterday and spotted a Red Kite just outside the main shopping area, which just looked wrong.

I’m no twitcher but I remember reading that they were reintroduced around the Chiltons 15-20 years ago and are now very common, especially in the Basingstoke Alps across the M3. Its not unusual to see a dozen or so birds following a ploughing tractor.

They were reintroduced up here at about the same time and are succeeding very well - we can have as many as eight circling over the area at any one time and there are reports of a breeding pair that have taken up residence atop a tower block a mile or two away.

Animals.

Went a quick loop from my house today. Farmland starts about 50m from my front door. Yes , there are still farms in Glasgow.
Headed towards Milngavie, along through Torrance , on to the canal and back towards home.
Very few cows or sheep about.

I do miss responsible dog owners. The folk able to control the damn things, you know like not having them maul livestock and have ground nesting birds abandon nests. Not screaming at the top of their voices at dogs half a mile away would be nice too.
I know it seems to be THE LAW now in the UK that you have to own one of the farking things, but for heavens sake dog owners, have a word with yourselves.
