We're just back from a week in a caravan in the Lakes. We always hire a three bedroom van so that we don't have to listen to the kids argue about who is going to sleep where. We don't tend to spend a lot of the time on the site as we like to get out and explore, but the night time entertainment is a plus for keeping the kids amused.

Camping. I love it, always have. Always look for a small campsite that doesn't allow caravans but welcomes dogs and open fires. There aren't that many of them, but you only need one a year. The kids love it, it's really healthy, you'll never get a better night's sleep, you always come back brown as a berry, even if it hasn't been all that sunny, just 'cos you're outdoors all day every day. If it rains, you do jigsaws, play cards, read books, drink tea...

We've camped for many years in our trailer tent but not in the UK for a while now. Too much racket after dark so took to travelling to France and spent the last two summers in Holland. Currently in sunny Delft sipping Belgian beer after a 20 mile flat bike ride to Schipluiden and about to head into town for something to eat in the Beestenmarkt before finding someone to sell me more Belgian ale then I'll wibble slowly back to my tent.

Camping here as well, normally France as the pitches are so much bigger and campsites on the whole nicer, but going to Dorset this year so see some family. We have a tent the size of a small house and whilst it takes a bit of time getting up (90 mins) it is well worth it,

We have camped for years and really enjoy it. We occasionally add a couple of nights in an apartment in the middle of the holiday. But, for us, camping is ideal. we take the bikes and rack up some good miles from the site. When I had kids who would go on holiday with me, they also liked camping - preferring the outdoor experiences.

Hmm - I'm watching this thread for ideas - I'm always hopeless at booking holidays and need to decide quickly what we are going to do before the summer is over.

We often camp - but if we do we can't take the bikes which would be absolutely ideal in my books. We like the quieter campsites without entertainment - and prefer a bit of water as our entertainment - kids can spend ages wading, swimming, collecting crabs you name it. However our last few summer holiday camps have been spoilt by being really wet. I'm busy looking at ideas of where to try and rent a cottage so we could take the bikes with us.

Take a large holiday let house in Cornwall/ Devon for a week for you and your parents, siblings and their families, and enjoy everyone's company while you are all fit and well... preferably with a swimming pool and a games room. Even taken the nutty aunty and the Monopoly!

We had an annual 'Monopoly Challenge' with a proper Cup which was engraved with the winner's name and returned each year.... from 2000 to 2006. Miss those long, lazy sunny days! Take turns to cook each evening in the big family kitchen with plenty of wine/ beer/ coffee/tea and relax. fantastic

We had 11 in an 8 bedroom house one year... + a reunion for local family members to join in. Works out to about £250/£300 per family for the week. Try Helpful Holidays for Uk or Sealand Villas for Mallorca... who provide a free hire car! [probably need to upgrade to a 7/8 seater as we did for 7 in a 5 bed villa]

i actually love a good caravan holiday. a good six berth static caravan in Dorset for two weeks suits me just fine, although we haven't been able to afford to go for a few years due to redundancies

had a few weekends away in B&Bs when we had the old mini. love going down to a full English breakfast and then not having to wash up afterwards.

my farther-in-law lives in south wales (neath) so we have a free week down there twice a year.

to be honest, any time spent in a nice little British seaside town is a bonus for me. nothing better than fish and chips by the sea :becool:

Every year we hire a lodge in Cornwall for a week and the rest of the time we try and camp. This year has been a bit different due to Mrs Skud being pregnant with mini-Skud number four....must work out what causes that ! so we have not camped this year with the exception of me on my Manchester to Cornwall ride.

We're just coming to the end of two weeks on Texel - an island off the north coast of the Netherlands.

We caught the train and then a ferry up here. Staying in a "Dune Bungalow" which is essentially a large permanent caravan on a campsite. Hired bikes from the campsite (with child seats and panniers), so have spent most of our time riding around exploring the island. It's great with small children, although there are two breweries on the Island, so plenty of good ale available for the grown ups!

There are only Dutch and Germans here - distinguishable by the fact that Germans wear bike helmets, whereas the Dutch don't.
