So if your ruthless what is it to have ruth?

Kirstie's right. The original mediaeval word 'ruth' has fallen from common use, but is still in even fairly small Oxford dictionaries.

Ruth, itself is based on 'rue' which is still used, but not normally in this sense to mean 'compassion or pity', but is when it appears in 'ruefull'.

Ruthless is therefore without compassion or pity.
