Tried to commission new shower valve last night but discovered after much frustration that it has a fault with a non-return valve and won't mix cold water.

Out later for an evening blast with new riding buddy, felt weak, got a sore throat. Couldn't keep up.

Woken at 3:15 by barking dog.

At breakfast wife is moaning because there's no hot water, turns out the 1 month old boiler has a fault. It hasn't been performing properly since it was installed and this is the last straw. Plumber is there now.

Son moaning because somebody keeps punching him at school. "Punch him back!" I say and get bollocked because apparently the recommended action is to tell a teacher.

No ironed shirts as wife has gone on ironing strike. Thank God for M&S non-iron shirts.

M66 southbound is closed after a motorcyclist got killed at 6:00 and after trying three different routes to work I finally make it after 2hrs and 15 minutes.

What's next, do you think?

You make yourself a long-awaited cup of tea to cheer yourself up. Mebbe a biscuit too. Once back at your desk, you take that first sip of char. And discover that the milk's turned.

Well, it comes in threes: you've had two lots of three and one extra. That means you need to expect two more bummers today. Hopefully they will be something small.

Also, remember karma. Clearly something brilliant is about to happen to you...

No, there's more....

A hotel booking I made last week through Lastminute.com at a cost of £532.45 cannot be cancelled. My business visitor has changed his mind. Anybody fancy 4 nights in the King's Cross Holiday Inn?

sounds like a load of fiddle. Dispute it with your credit card.

It's a company card and they've already charged us. If I can't persuade the customer to stick to his plans I'm in the shiites.

Call Amex/Visa and ask them to set up a dispute on the transaction. The company/hotel then has to come up with proof that they have reason to charge what they're asking. If you don't use the hotel room, they have no proof.

I'm not saying it's a dead cert, but it's worked for me several times. F**k 'em.

Unfortunately, I have often had to cancel hotel bookings. Sometimes they have deducted one night's accomodation fee, and sometimes nothing at all.

One kept the deposit, and I could rebook within the next 12 months using the same deposit.

As Dan Bo suggests, I would challenge the hotel on this one.

Thanks for the advice - he's feeling guilty now and has agreed to stick to his original plans. Whew!
