What time of day do you leave/return?
How long before the home journey?

I'd guess your journey takes about 40-50 mins (depending on traffic and conditions). You don't want anything too filling just prior to a longish commute; something like a banana and a glass of milk, and an energy bar en route.
I cycle on an empty stomach in the mornings, leaving at 6:00 and have a 25 min ride, then shower and breakfast at work (flakes, muesli and milk).

These may offer some help:

Hi & welcome! Hope you enjoy cycle-commuting, you'll soon be super-fit!

9 miles ish each way, I'd just have a reasonable brekkie, whatever takes your fancy and maybe a banana or flapjack an hour before you leave work.

Fairly simple really! Soon 17 miles will be a walk in the park.

Cheers
