Define hybrid- do you want a flat bar road bike or something that'll take a bit of a beating with racks and guards all over?
What is the intended purpose, road surface, carrying need etc.

Hi Taz,

As far as I'm concerned you can't go wrong with a Boardman from Halfords (just get a decent bike mechanic or shop to check it over for you after you've picked it up).

You can get the Performance Hybrid for £430 or the Hybrid Comp for £500 if you're after a fast flat bar bike style, or the MX Sport for £500 if you're after a softer ride with a suspension front fork and the ability for light off road use.

At that price there's plenty of options so don't rush in - I'm sure more will be posted soon.

On a road?
I would def look at something road orientated if not an actual road bike for that distance.
You want to make life as easy as you can for yourself for that distance so varying hand positions, high gearing and as light as possible are going to be an advantage

I've had 2 Specialized Sirrus, rode one across Spain, I've also had Trek FX's, I would not buy either again.

Both makes were bought to replace stolen Dawes Discovery's 301 and 501. The Dawes are far sturdier bikes with small component quality that does not turn to cheese as soon as a tool comes near, the quality of the Spesh and Trek compared was shocking, it's put me off both brands for life. All are"good" bikes but it's when you want to work on them, replace or adjust something that you find out the build quality.

Soon as I got back from Spain I sold the Sirrus and bought another Disco 501, you can afford a 401 or maybe an old stock 501.

If you road a spesh across Spain, i think it would be fine for an 85 mile charity ride. Low end bikes from spesh are no better or worse than any other manufacturer in my book. A lot depends on how a bike is ridden, cared for and serviced.

I do all my own maintenance and had similar bikes to compare it with, the Dawes small component quality is far superior, that's why I went back to them. The first time I adjusted the brakes on the Spesh, the block screw head melted, I changed a tyre, put the wheel on the ground and the lovely black spoke lacquer vanished, little things, but one after another, the quality was pitiful, same for the FX. It is a shame as the Sirrus is a far better looking bike than the Dawes, I'd agree with User about design..

I meant really small things, not the drive train, wheels or frame, I meant cables, screws, bolts, paint, lacquer etc Screw heads disintegrating when adjusting something, in the middle of nowhere, can have profound affect on an asessment of a bikes "quality". 2 weeks touring on it left it looking like a 5 year old bike, I have a 2006 501 that looks like new after several tours. As I said in my original post, they are all "good" bikes, but if I was buying one to keep and use, after a charity ride, then my experience would ensure it was not a Sirrus, maybe I was unlucky, but then I've owned two...........and several Disco's to compare them with
