It's a microcontroller - a very small computer. Connect it to more electronical bits and with a bit of programming you can do all sorts, from controlling robots, to automatically watering plants or automating the home.

Well "her indoors" food processor stopped working. I had a look inside and discovered that the temperature fuse had blown. ebay to the rescue for hardly any dosh at all and now the food processor continues to process. Those bits are very handy and it saves all that landfill nonsense (and my bank balance).
