If ever I am forced to go to that London, the thing I most look forward to is seeing the sign that reads M1 north. The higher the number on the blue board, the lighter my soul.
A1 + A14 is faster to the M6 than the M1 .
keep your foot to the floor and then there's one less miserable northern git in London ;)

Born and brought up in the North, but far prefer civilisation

Fewer. The word is 'fewer', not 'less'. And rest assured we have a day of regional mourning to commemorate your leaving.

The wife has final convinced me that a trip to London is on the cards, to see the sights and all that.

I will be staying in a hotel behind the Tower of London with the wife and our five year old daughter in August (The weekend after the ride London 100 thing).

So with my limited knowledge of all things London i need to pack in as many sight seeing things into a Friday afternoon and full day Saturday/Sunday Morning.

So far i have
The Tower of London
Tower bridge
Buckingham Palace
St Paul's
The Natural History Museum
Hyde Park with Diana s Fountain (The wifes idea not mine)

These are all the obvious ones
Any good off the beaten track ideas please

I would avoid some of those - don't go to Tower Bridge go to London bridge and get a better view of it. Then whilst you're there pop into Borough Market and get some amazing coffee and Jam and bread in Monmouth Coffee.

The natural history museum is okay, but the British Museum is way more fun - IT HAS MUMMIES!!!!!! (And far fewer children) If you do have kids, they organise monthly sleepovers in the museum too. The Science museum also rocks as it has stuff you can touch and play with!

Hyde Park is wonderful, but busy. You might also want to try Battersea park (where they also hire out recumbants.....) with its pagoda and zoo (yes, really) and Holland Park which has beautiful Oriental gardens.

I would also seek out The Breakfast Club in Spitalfields, eat one of the lush all day American breakfasts and then ask to speak to "The mayor of scaredy cat town" (no, really) and see what happens. You could also visit Spitalfields Market, Petticoat Lane Market and do a Jack the Ripper walking tour, with a visit to the Ten bells pub, his stalking ground. This is also close to Spitalfields City Farm (you get to play with the animals!!!!), Dennis Sever's house, Brick Lane (though don't get a curry there, go to a place called Tayyabs but DO get a beigel from the far end of brick lane from the 24 hour beigel place and also top it off with a trip to brewdog on Bethnal Green Road. There is also a top Turkish a short overground ride away - Mangal and mangal 2), Leadenhall Market, The ice rink at Broadgate, The Geffrye Museum (Which shows houses through the ages and ROCKS) Monument and a lovely little secret garden in the city, St Dunstan in the East.

And if you love bizarre and hillarious museums, try the Horniman in Forest Hill.

Hope some of this is of some use.

I don't know how old the little one is but Boris Bikes and a cycle ride from Tower Bridge to Greenwich might appeal - cycle superhypeway 3, I think it is, and then NCN1. Drop the bikes at the north end of the foot tunnel, and then cross to Greenwich on foot.

I think that the five year old in the party would find the itinerary tiring.

Seriously, don't do the London Eye. Very boring and if the weather is dull you can't see anything anyway. Your 5-year-old will get very restless!

Another vote for a boat trip on one of the Clippers - you see more interesting things than the Eye.
