Hi all,

I moved house 3 months back and increased my commute from 15 miles (total) a day to 20 miles, struggled on my MTB then got a Hybrid bike and now do it with no issues.

Looks like I will be moving again in the summer, I just checked the distance and it is a 28 mile round commute  do you think I can do this or will I be  LOL ...

What is your distance and long does it take you?

Thanks

I do about 7-8 miles each way: half an hour, give or take. 14 miles sounds like quite a haul. Doable, I'd have thought, especially since you're already doing not that much less with 'no issues'. I would, tho', depending on the road surface, at least give a thought to trying out a road bike/racer. A good one could, I suspect, give you as much of a lift as your change from MTB to hybrid.

I do a 30-38 mile commute on an mtb with panniers and slicks... and all it takes me is between 60-75 mins going in and 90 mins return trip and with me living in scotlandshire there is a hill or two.

So yes it is very very do able.

Mine is usually between 15 and 26 round trip, depending upon if I have to go to another site - which happened 3 times last week, and will be twice this week. As it gets less icy, and a bit brighter, it will be a minimum of 22 round trip, and up to 34 (long way home)...

My shortest commute is only 6.5 miles round. I'd guess with adding trips to the shops my average trip would only be sub 10 mile round. When I didn't have a road bike I used to take long cuts in the summer and it might have been longer; now I tend to take the shortest route home so I can get out on my road bikes.

Nil - I haven't been on the bike for ages! Actually it's 15 mile round trip - when my youngest starts senior school my commute will be more frequent, at the moment every time I do it, it's like starting over again.

I don't know if its an option for you but when I lived further away: I cycled a mile to the station, took the bike on the train and cycled the 1/2 mile to the office and cycled the 17.5 miles home at night (that'd take about 1h15). One of the main driving factor for me was we have no shower at work.

Yeah thats do able and is what I do. Mine is 14.5 miles each way and in the summer I will often extend the morning ride in to 22 miles.

For the standard 14.5 miles which is mainly flat and half of which is countryside I average 60 - 65 mins in the winter and 50 - 55 mins in the summer (best time is 43 min 45 secs)

Just make sure you carry enough tools for running repairs and I also carry 2 spare tubes. Allow a bit more time if the wind is howling and if it is persisting with rain.

Only 8 miles each way for me. As an aside the first half going in is along narrow single carriageway so I am very used to close overtaking which is why I am always amused by people complaining on here about this. I have yet to see a very close overtake on all of the videos posted. I guess it depends on the individual as to what is close - for me it would be less than 1 foot.

Having drifted off topic I'll add it takes around 26-30 mins going in (no showers at work) and I like to take around 24 mins to get home.

I do 13 miles each way. I am a big fella 16st+. When I started it was a couple of days a week, after 4-6 weeks or so I was commuting by bike every day:biggrin:

I started out in December by cycling to the station, 3.5 miles each way. First time I had to let my train go and get the next one, I was sweating enough to have been offensive! Later that day returned to find my bike had been stolen. So I got a cheapo hybrid(£70 new) and lugged it on the train to the office with me. Started daydreaming about other options and mused as to whether the full commute, 20.26 miles each way, would be feasible. Got it in my head that I could save money, lose weight, get fit and combine my exercise with my, previously dead, commuting time. Also the disbelief and hilarity, from friends and colleagues, at the mere idea spurred me on.

Save money my a*se(spend to date is approx £1600), got bitten by the bike bug and have spent loads on new bike and accompanying kit:biggrin: But I've now done the full commute 4 times and tomorrow will be No 5. Working on Mon/Wed/Fri all the way and Tues/Thurs bike and train. I started this at age 42 and 17.5 stone, if I can do it................
