I will however be switching over to my icebike for the winter (basic steel MTB frame with studded tyres, simple V-brakes, fenders with big clearances (for snow), singlespeed front ring and 7-speed rear derailleur - I would use a hub gear but I'm adapting what I've got).

If I had it all to do again I may well have gone for a 7 speed derailler setup just like this, rather than a hub gear. This would be based on initial cost and ease of maintenance, ie QR wheels etc. £20 for cassette and chain, £15 for rear derailler, £20 for trigger shifter and cable. If you aim for a high gear around the 90 inch mark you get a pretty good spread of gears. At these prices you could afford to have a second wheel as backup, not something many can do with hub gears.

My main commuting bike is, er, a Saab 900. But if I do commute by bike I use my Dawes Galaxy, mainly because I work nights and the Galaxy is the only bike I've got with dynamo lights. And a rack. Besides, tourers make great commuters, especially if you have to carry stuff like I do.

My main Commuting bike is a Fixed....... BUT..........

2.5 years ago, changed jobs - i.e get a job nearer home....for commuting by bike (had a few years of 60 plus mile return commutes......in a car...had enough - had three bikes in garage...)

Both road bikes don't do guards (and I doubt cruds - no clearance)...so went slicked MTB as I didn't use it for MTB duties.....

Was fine, did the job, but limited me for doing anything with the kids, as the other two bikes don't do any off road, the MTB didn't do it too now....with road slicks.

Decided, don't need gears on the commute (I have a few hills) so went fixed.....went into a mate's shop, and said...I'll have that, but with XYZ..... sorted..... done via cyclescheme (i.e. flexible - neither me or the owner knew the final price until the day I picked it up.......)...

The rest is..well....happy - love riding fixed.....
