What kind of oil would you put in your old Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub?

I nipped down to Morrisons this evening and couldn't help thinking I should put some oil in the hub. The last time I used some gear oil mixed with some lighter stuff. What would you use?

I don't own one now, but I used to use 10w oil when I did. When I were a kid we all used 3in1 with no Ill effect.

Don't use 3 in 1. Long term it gunges up and actually causes corrosion. Ideally use 30SAE motor oil, easily available from garden centres sold as Lawnmower motor oil but any engine oil would be fine. Not sure about modern thin fully synthetics though.

I have 2 SA hubs on projects* that I really need to get a look at sometime soon.
Just bung a load of something vaguely oily in seems to be the general consensus.

Is there a nipple on it or something? Can it be done with minimum/no dismantling?

Mine is a newer one. It's quieter with some oil it in it.

We all used to be advised to use ATF(automatic transmission fluid) or chainsaw oil.

I use chainsaw oil but only cos that's what is in my oilcan.
