However much I love my bikes, an however stupid the amounts I've spent on them, I'd still trade them in for a top motor.....

Are you on the right forum?

I drive a BMW - lovely car worth 40 times My Allez Elite and i do consider myself a bit of a petrol head, but given the choice I will cycle!

Bikes are a great leveller. I find alot of jealousy and competitiveness can arise from owning a certain type of car. OK you so get it with bikes, but you wanna race with someone else and its down to simply you and them (a pro bike wont add a massive amount to an off the shelf road bike for normal people IMO) not how much money they earn and how fast their car goes!

I wouldn't either.
Me neither. Just not fussed about cars. I've got one, it's 6 years old and it's used to ferry stuff about.

Actually, scrub the german cars, I want a Nissan Skyline

Ha ha - I am well into my cars as well as my bike and my husband has a Nissan Skyline - I would definately recommend one!

People are really surprised when they hear that I drive an MX5 too. They think I am bike only! (Mind you I only actually travelled 600 miles in it last year!)

We also have a Scorpio Ultima for "dirty driving" as a more practical car! (I hate to admit that lurking in the background is also a Honda Prelude that has a broken gearbox but my hubby can't bear to part with it!).

.... of course - none of this stops me from being a victim of the "you don't pay road tax" chant!!!

I used to love cars until I got a motorbike but even then you spend more time scanning for the plod than you do having fun, at least on the pushbike you can go crazy and avoid tickets.

The traffic in my area over the last ten years has grown exponentially and driving is simply a chore, I'd rather sit as the passenger playing peekaboo with my son than have to ride the clutch all the time because 90% of people have no concept of smooth driving, even if you leave a gap you'll find some bugger jumps in and you're back to square one.

Cars are too easy to drive these days, we should go back to the late 80's! No power steering, heavy clutches and spongy breaks, at least people would then spend more time driving than fiddling with their radio, speaking on their phones and doing their hair.

I do sometimes feel a little on my own on here in that I'm into both bikes and cars

Ideally i would have a Landcruiser and either a BMW 8 series or a Merc CL50 or something alongside the fleet of bikes!

I'd swap my bike for a high end motor...even if you don't like driving, the high end motor would have a much higher second hand value than you're bike...therefore, sell it for many new bikes xx(.

Some of us still drive 1980s designs:thumbsup:

I like cars, but driving is no fun in this country - locally the roads are snarled up, even weekends. Prefer the bike. We don't intend changing our cars, had mine from 10 months old, and we've had my wifes from new - mine's now 7 and the wife's is nearly 10 years old - next purchase will be another two bikes.....for me.....eventually.....

What we have learnt here..
1: Your kids go to private school

For which we sacrifice a great deal, and are helped by the in-laws.

2: You drive a £25000+ car

I paid nine grand a while back, second hand two years ago, its worth very little now, I bought it outright from money I had earnt and saved. My point was that my car is ok, but not worth much and for the competitive amongst us, Big shiny new Merc trumps 6 year old Saab which is a plain old Vectra underneath anyway !

3: said car you like to drive fast

I said the car goes like the clappers, not that I do, I enjoy a responsive car with plenty of power for safe overtaking, I have driven it less than 300 miles this year so far.

4: You ride a £679 bike

Via the Cycle to work scheme, point being I was comparing the relative prices.

5: You like to brag about things

Not really, a (not that expensive in the scheme of things) bike on finance, a aging Saab and spending way too much money on education at the expense of holidays and many other things.

6: You got upset that he has a better car then you?

Did I say upset, like I said, I dont do jealous, I cannot comprehend being able to ever spend that much on a car, I just get bemused at the amount some spend, what really amazed me was the one that rocked up in his helicoper when I was picking my lad up one day. I cannot spend any time on being "Upset" about someone having a fancy car, there are a lot of them about, it would use up too much energy and besides, they dont get to wear Lycra tights

7: You arriving on a bike is apparently an odd sight

Yes, yes it is, bit overweight, dressed in a get up that makes me look like Big Bird off Sesame Street.

8: You try to justify all the above by implying that Mercman is jealous that you ride a bike.

Not jealous per-se, I was surprised at his reaction, I was expecting perhaps him to feel sorry for me having to ride to work, but in actual fact it was quite different, sorry if it came acrosss as bragging, that wasnt the intention it was to set the context for what I was saying, what is the point of bragging on a forum (or anywhere else), I scould say I had the big Merc, Ferrari or Helicopter for that matter, I am but a username on here, nobody knows me so it doesnt really work if you do brag, I dont in person but sometimes there are facts, sometimes people say stuff and they arent ramming something down your throat, I am not going to be embarrassed to talk about things because others may not choose or be able to spend their money the same way I do.

i'm hoping that when i eventually get rid of my 30 year old fiesta i'll be able to get a tax exempt (due to age) VW camper

then i'll be able to say "i know, the car doesn't need tax either"

After commuting by bike for the last 18 months, my new job is a bit too far for cycling. I'm planning on doing it maybe 1/2 times per week, especially when the weather gets better.

In the meantime though, I've just bought this - the CO2 emissions are a tad embarrassing.

I love cars and bikes, you just gotta choose the right tool for the job!
