Only one good use for a car

That's carrying the bike somewhere you want to go riding for the day! I have one (car that is) because I have to, but if I could sensibly get rid of it I would.

Similar to the OP, who seems to have beenshot down in flames, I place my neck on the block and admit to an interest and liking of fast cars and an enjoyment of driving as well as cycling. Our children also went to private schools for which we sacrificed holidays and luxuries to pay fees assisted by scholarships. We weathered the assumption of privilege and the inverted snobbery that goes with it and are now catching up financially. It was our choice and we are pleased with the opportunities that were and are available for our children. The original post seems to have been misunderstood completely simply because fast cars, expensive cars and private education have dared to be mentioned. Those of us who appear to make choices of privilege and unnecessarily expensive and powerful cars do not criticize those whose primary interest is in protection of the environment and the avoidance or hatred of driving. People have varying sets of values and these should be respected rather than ridiculed.

Not to forget those that buy fast cars and pay for education keep some of us gainfully employed and mean there's more money to spread around state education for the rest of our children.

Whisper it quietly....I subscribe to Practical Performance Car.
I admire greatly some of the engineering that goes into the featured cars. A mk I / II Escort with a modern engine? Yes please. Modern efficient clean and powerful engine coupled with a classic shape and no electrical gadgets. In fact my first car, a Vauxhall Viva HC with a modern lum would do equally well.

My kids will have to be state educated. I could manage fees for one of them, but not both. Not a decision to contemplate.

I always feel slightly melancholy when I see bikes carried on cars. Silly, I know.

I do sometimes feel a little on my own on here in that I'm into both bikes and cars

Ideally i would have a Landcruiser and either a BMW 8 series or a Merc CL50 or something alongside the fleet of bikes!

No, I like cars (and I love driving) too. I'm not particularly into the standard "aspirational" motors - Mercs, BMWs and the like - but I do have a soft spot for things like my dad's Carrera 4S.

but I think most people who aren't seriously physically infirm would be surprised at the distance they were able to do, and how easily they could do it, if they gave it a try.

Quoted for truth.

Of course they might get out of breath a bit, but htne they'll learn that this doesn't actually kill you. No really it doesn't.

Cheers YoYo, I think you got my post, the things I mentioned were relevant to what I was getting at, i.e. how cyclists are perceived by others.

Its nice to see that we arent all car hating eco-freaks, in fact a few petrolheads, Mk1 Escorts, now your talking, S2000's as well. I do love cars, enjoyed considerately, responsibly and in moderation they are wonderful devices, I personally have only filled my car once this year and there is a still a few miles in it so carbon footprint wise I suspect I mine is smaller than 99% of the adult population.

Money and wealth is a funny thing, I am by no means "rich", I earn quite well, am careful and not extravagent, I buy quality stuff and look after it, I know wealthy people and to be honest most are no happier, sometimes a lot less happy than those with less as they feel that their cash buys them the right to buy happy, no it buys you "stuff", I know people with money who dont do anything, are miserable and unhealthy, I know Millionaires that I would not swap positions with due to other things that they have to deal with that all the money in the world wont change.

I do not get jealous of money, I get envious of the cyclists that overtake me, my brothers skill playing the guitar, people who write, have time to indulge a passion, paint, take superb photos, make me laugh, those are the things to aspire to, money is not a shortcut to happiness or respect, not real respect anyway, we have a whole society full of people aspiring to more more more, those in leased Range Rovers, mortgaged to the hilt to gain respect.

My point was that, riding a push bike 15 miles a day seems to, with certain people, sometimes those you dont expect to, gain you a little kudos, which makes me smile, not in a Smug way, in a maybe the whole world isnt obsessed with aquiring shiny things with lables on and rubbing your nose in it.

Amen to that. I know I was dismissive of cars earlier up the thread, but that's not to say I despise those that are into them .. just that I'm indifferent myself.

I guess I'm in a similar situation to you, J4CKO, earnings-wise and so forth, but I would MUCH rather go out for a walk up a mountain, or though the woods than spend a fortune for a day in a "posh" gym .. not to disparage those that DO wish to go there, it's their choice .. but from conversations I've overheard it seems there are many who go there to be seen, and who are hugely in debt so to do, which is worrying.

There's a huge new housing estate near where I work which seems to be populated mostly by people of that ilk: image is all, and image to them is defined by what you spend.
