i will have a look on ebay  the bike iam interested in is the GT GTR SERIES 5 which ive seen for £459.99 new.

If you see anything that catches your eye but your not to savvy on kit and condition, then just post it up here and we'll give you the lowdown, whether you want to avoid it or not

Tell you what are decent starter road bikes.. look at the viking series, the ones around the price your looking at look like decent kit, my viking sprint lasted me a good six months before I had to replace anything, and thats the £200 model with cheap shimano stuff on it, using it on long training rides and commutes.. did over 5,000 miles

bit more expensive, but you get shimano sora on it

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Viking-Pu...03597?pt=UK_Bikes_GL&var=&hash=item895ff0ce8e

or if your looking at doing some TT's too,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Viking-Tr...69631?pt=UK_Bikes_GL&var=&hash=item746d4dbc8e

but then second hand you can get the likes of cannondale CAAD, which are great bikes

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cannondal...0833924994?pt=UK_Bikes_GL&hash=item2a1a8ab782

The only downside is, no warranty, and you cant really go and sit on it and give it a feel before buying.

Before you commit, three questions:

1. Have you viewed and/or rode the GTR5 in the flesh? For instance I really liked the aesthetics of the 2010 GTR3 - which was bright red and silver in pictures - but when I actually test-rode it it turned out to be maroon and a kind of drab grey. Plus it didn't ride well for me. So in more than one way you need to see the bike first hand.

2. The chainset is 52/39 which means the lowest gear you can achieve is going to be pretty high, so that would be fine if your cycling is flattish and/or you're really fit, but if you've got hills or prefer a more sedate pace, it may be too high. A good shop may be able to put a compact double on instead which would give you lower gears for climbs but still high enough for most of the speedy stuff.

3. The GTR I think is a bit heavier than comparably priced bikes from other big brands like Specialized, Trek, Cube etc. Worth knowing if weight is important to you.

Cheers
