Hi,

I’m buying a new bike to do regular 50+ mile rides and will do the odd 100+ mile rides and want to know what shoe to get. Am I best getting a road shoe or MTB shoe, I don’t think I will do much walking around, my main priority is to get the right shoe for riding long distance. I’ve heard that a full carbon sole while excellent for racing, isn’t always the best option for long distance and a sole with a slight flex in it would be better? Can anyone advise me from experience? (Pedals are another story but will leave them out of this post for now)

Road shoes I was thinking of something like:-

Specialized BG PRO ROAD SHOE (Black or White Colour options)

OR

Bontrager RXL Road shoe (Black or White Colour Options)

For MTB Shoes, the equivalent would be:-

Specialized BG PRO MTB SHOE

OR

Bontrager RXL Mountain (Black or White Colour Options)

Thank you!

I have a pair of these:

They have degree of flexibilty and they're comfortable for long rides. I've not tried full on carbon sole ones though, so not sure how much of a compromise they are.

you should get a pair of shoes, not just one.
I would have thought that were obvious.

I have Specialized MTB shoes for road use, as I tend to ride longer distances to family functions and events which require some walking about as well as for the usual long rides. I just find them a bit more practical than outright road shoes. If I had the funds I'd have a pair of both (and will eventually) so I could pick and choose for the occasion.

Ha, very funny. It could be I already have a pair and I'm after one for my third leg.

Anyway....

Comatosed, I've tried the link in your post but it doesnt seem to work, comes up with an error on Specialized website?

Shoes which are comfortable for you. Seriously.

Specialised Body Geometry shoes do not work for everyone. I had a pair, and ultimately gave them away - they were never comfortable (for me). These days I have four pairs of shoes I use regularly, and they're all Sidis. That isn't a recommendation -they work for me, they might not work for you. Try on as many brands as you can, see how they feel. Obviously they will feel different after fifty miles and you can't assess that in the shop!

If (like me) your feet swell on long ride you will want shoes which you can easily adjust on the move.

Road shoes with larger cleats are less likely to develop pressure spots on long rides. However on the other side of the coin, if you wear road shoes then you'll need to have other shoes to change into when you get to your destination, whereas if you wear MTB style shoes you can get away without.

They're the 'Toho MTB' shoes.
