By all means refer to people's ethnic groups, but do it accurately and appropriately.
That's the problem. A former colleague who has Canadian/UK passports but is of 3/4 black Jamaican and 1/4 Chinese background understandably got annoyed when a US passport control suggested she put African American down. I have African colleagues who range in skin colour from extremely dark almost indigo to pale and Mediterannean looking (and I am excluding those of South African background or Indian ethnic links)
 
For me it's when I come across patronising phrases like 'people of colour'.

To be fair, where I work, there's been quite a few people off colour all week.
