I'm looking for my first road bike, i have a budget of about 200 pounds but no more than 250. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you're buying new, stretch a tiny bit more and look at the Triban 3 from Decathlon, or the Carrera TDF Ltd at Halfords. Otherwise I would look secondhand.

Fit is all-important with a road bike, it's worth taking time to be sure that the bike is the right size for you.

Vikings aren't bad for the money but bit basic I'd stretch your budget to a defy 5 or triban 3 but I road 3000 miles on a viking clubmaster with little trouble though

You could even go for a secondhand Viking, which might of been upgraded. Be careful of buying older bikes though, unless you know what you are buying you could end up buying a lot of trouble. If you can try to get something that has had little use then it might be a good buy. Have a look on the classifieds here. If you'd be happy with a classic retro racer @biggs682 might be able to help. How tall are you?

Its the groupset thats the problem.. Very basic Shimano servicable but not brilliant no brake leavers just butterfly levers on the bars. The wheels weren't to bad deep rim alloy, I wouldn't say don't but one, but if you can stretch the budget a bit you will get a far better bike.... Saying that I got some valuable experience on it after 30 years off a road bike, and it got a few scrapes and scratches that would've P*****d me off on a more expensive bike

Edit: If you do go for a Viking don't pay the Avocet's (the maker/importers) list price my Clubmaster was lited at £349.99 Halfords did it for £220

Have I just read that right?

Fifteen. Thousand. Pounds

For a frameset and bars...

@ant77 you will get very little for £250 in the new market. Unless you can increase your budget, second hand is definitely the best way to go. If you're unsure about road bikes, do you know anyone who may be able to help you? If not, post what you find up here and you should get plenty of help.
