What to put on app form for part time job?

Hi,

Rephrasing and reposting this here, from another thread after it was suggested a few recruitment people may read it. Through illness and one or two other things I'm applying for a part time job and I've an issue with it.....

What would people put on an application form (its a pretty basic form so am going to have to add supplementary notes / paper) - when its part time and the job could be seen as the recruiter as below me? As I am imagining I will get rejected as over qualified and when he / she reads I used to be an analyst and previously account manager, leave him / her wondering. This is for a part time job in a garden centre and I have more than the skills they need.

My idea with something that is pt is it will allow me to enjoy the summer (what we have of one weather wise), to go training on my bike and slow the rate at which I use my bank balance (ie happy (I think) - to use my bank balance towards paying bills and to allow me to work shorter hours for a while).

I need to say why I want that job and something part time..perhaps something some of the following phrased in the right way?
- I am off an age where I appreciate life / work balance and a part time role (20 hours in this case) will give me what I am looking for
- though its a back office role it is in a garden centre so helps me to incorporate my interest in gardening into my work
- (similar to point one) it will allow me to train as I would like - which is true and I could big up a little to make it more credible since I am sort of novice-ish level still.

Help much appreciated

Probably depends how old you are. In Sainsburys there always seems to be people of retirement age working a little bit. I've no idea what qualifications they have, maybe none, but maybe same as your case. I am sure here they just want a few hours work to keep busy and to supplement their income.

If they think you're just wanting this part time job until you can find something better which you are qualified for, then they are probably going to be less interested in hiring you.

That's what I thought - if you make it clear that you are training for some long term lifestyle change objective, rather than something in September, it might go down better. Otherwise, sounds ok - assuming you are interested in gardening and can answer questions on that, of course!

I'd be careful about thinking in terms of minimum skills they say they need. There are so many jobs where they say this, but as it is such an employers' market they might be expecting considerably more than this and seem 'picky'. I would miss out some of the skills and experience you think might end up being discriminated against and play everything else in the person specification up like crazy. You really want the job, so I don't see why you shouldn't spruce it up. Good luck!
