My TV is about to give up the ghost and I'll be wanting a new one. Probably about 40 inch screen and that's about as much as I know. 3D? Full HD? HD Ready? Smart? LED/LCD/Plasma?
Help!

My next TV will be a Smart TV, it needs to connect to the internet so you can download content direct from Iplayer etc.

I've got a 36" Sony Bravia LCD which has never let me down and has a really good picture quality. Got 3 HDMI ports and even has a SCART socket for when I want to go old school.

Personally I'm not fussed about 3D, as every film I've seen in it has given me a headache. Similarly having it 'Smart', if I want Internet based stuff I'll hook my laptop up.

Make sure it's not too big for your room.

TV? What is a TV?

I have a large flat screen monitor connected to my PC and my XBOX 360 (along with a 5.1 speaker set).
I can watch DVD's, watch BBC iPlayer (live stream, watch later stream or download), use Google Play (TV, movies, magazines, books and other things) and also play Civ 5 or World of Warcraft on it (when I am not out on the bike).

Broadcast TV is no longer of interest to me that much, I can get alot of what I want via BBC iPlayer or similar providers (like Google or 4OD).

With regards to films, while the price is probably a bit high, my preference is to see movies at the cinema on a Friday night rather than being sat at home, in fact I spend very little time in the house.

I have no issues with paying a TV license as most of the programmes I do watch (or listen to) are from the BBC anyway.

I do have a LG 42" LED smart tv, I would recommended getting one. I have also connected a hard drive so it can record tv programmes aswell.

I would say if you can afford it go for full hd
and even better if it can record tv
smart tv will let you use the iplayer (I think some Samsung models will let you view itv player, 4od and 5 on demand)
You can also watch youtube, and you can get Netflix, lovefilm, nowtv and so on, and even surf the internet.

Also if I have a video or pictures on my smart phone, I can send them to the tv and see them on there, and the tv will play movies from a usb memory stick, or from the PC.

This is like the one I have

to be honest, Sony TV's aren't anywhere near as good as what they used to be, and nowhere near as good as Panasonic. LG TV's have a tendancy to have rubbish speakers which can cause a rattle in the casing, Samsung are good but have issues with screen reliability (I used to work for Comet and we were, at one point, sending 48 pallets of TV's back to Samsung as faulty, but then they were selling a lot but it was definitely more than normal)

i'd go for a Panasonic. crystal clear screens and user interface is cool. I have a sharp LED and it's brilliant, but if it broke i'd get Panasonic

that's a tough choice. both are great TV's. The Samsung has a really good spec (200hz), but the Panasonic is a Panasonic but only 100hz and it's silver

I bought a 39'' Panasonic smart TV about 6 weeks ago and can't fault it, cost about £550 great picture and does all I need it to do and more.

FWIW when I was in the market for a TV, (all be it 5 years ago), I was advised by a friend who works in AV to go for a Panasonic or a Sony.

I got a Panasonic Viera plasma, and I would recommend one to anybody.

+1 I have a Viera plasma it's superb. Not jerky at all when watching football like just about every LCD I have seen when the camera is panning following a long ball or goal keepers kick etc, the colours also look better to me and blacks, blacker. On the downside I have a feeling that plasma's possibly use more power than LCD's or LED's, mine certainly puts out a lot of heat from a tv. In science I was taught that heat from a tv , light bulb or an engine or something is wasted energy, probably true
