I found a website before where you could see routes other people were cycling in your area and sort by distance etc but now I can't for the life of me remember its name!

I'm geographically challenged, and not very creative(!) and like to admire (steal/bastardise) other peoples routes!

Cycle streets and strava let you see other's routes, or the ones some clubs take. CTC used to have a list of maps online, think you might need to pay to get them though?

I know this isn't exactly what you asked for,but I use this quite alot

http://cycle.travel/

It plans you round routes to a given mileage often involving pubs, what's not to love :-) ( I cant seem to post smileys from my widows phone :-(.)
It also keeps you off main roads as much as possible

That last site looks great, but does anyone know if theres a way you can ask it to cut out unsurfaced or walking areas? I've just planned a route near to me and I know its possible without going on unpaved roads but it is quicker to go off road so its sending me that way.

It won't do a roads-only option by itself, I'm afraid - it does try to only use good surfaces unless the distance saving is massive. But you can always drag the route to where you want it to go (click and hold on a bit of the route, then drag).
