My parents used to have a lot of dinner parties and we kids would hang around and scoff the leftovers. One night I necked a tumbler full of sherry, followed by one of white wine then sherry then white wine. I was still drunk the next morning and it took me two days to recover.

I remember a sentence from the autobiography of Fergal Keane in which he describes his first taste of alcohol as a child. He says it wasn't so much a case of "Wow, this is new!" as "Hello old friend, where have you been all my life?" which I thought was an interesting insight into alcoholism.

The way Keane describes it, it was an immediate and palpable sensation on taking his first drink at a very young age.

Apparently, it was sherry at Christmas when I was about 2, after a careless adult left it in reach. Thereafter, I used to nick a sip of my dad's Guiness when possible

At the age of about 13 or 14, my best mate and I used to volunteer at weekends at a local archaeological dig. In the summer, the director of the dig used to bring in a few cans of cider, for the workers to consume at lunchtime, and I guess that was my first introduction to alcohol.

My first bad experience with it was at the age of about 15, when I went to an open air all-day folk concert on a hot day, armed with only a very large bottle of cheap wine. The hotter I got the more I drank. The more I drank, the thirstier I got, so the more I drank..... It didn't end well......
