Personally, after much thought, I think it started to go wrong in the first film. I don't think Obi Wan Kenobi should have been killed by Darth Vader. Personally, I would have had Obi Wan injured so badly by Darth Vader that he could not fight any more, but was still able to coach Luke Skywalker in the following episodes. Then we wouldn't have needed that stupid, irritating, Yoda character.

I also prefer the original premise of the movie as outlined by Obi Wan Kenobi at the start of film IV, as it subsequently became known: Luke Skywalker's father was betrayed by a fellow student, Darth Vader. The ways things developed makes Obi Wan Kenobi a complete disembler. Not only was Luke Skywalker's father not betrayed by his friend, but I distinctly remember Obi Wan Kenobi saying that he'd never owned that R2D2 droid. Alright, he may never have owned it, but he must have remembered it, especially as it was accompanied by the very distinctive C3PO unit. Yet another anomaly, Luke was brought up by his aunt and uncle on Tatooine, but when Darth Vader arrived on the planet, did he recognise his cyblings or in-laws?

George Lucas borrowed from great sources in Star Wars: Dambusters, 633 Squadron and The Hidden Fortress for beginners, but the more it progressed, the worse the franchise became.

Two words: Jah Jah Binks

And CGI. I know the original films will have had some, but when they started designing characters like Jah Jah, and those roll-up robots that seemed to be designed purely to show off that they weren't men in suits, the magic went.

I'll watch episodes IV, V and VI over and over, if I happen across them on telly. I won't bother with Episodes I, II and III. In fact, I've never seen III, so I don't know how it all connects up, so I might watch it once, but I don't expect to enjoy it.

I think I grew up.

Not saying that people that like Star Wars are childish, not at all. I saw the first Star Wars when I was 12 year old. It was magical, fun and captivating. I don't see that know, and the film hasn't changed (well, not much, depending on who you listen too!)

I've changed though. I watched the full series of films last year (shown on one of the channels here, in sequence on Sunday evenings). I did it out of curiosity and interest. They didn't suck, but I wouldn't bother again. They didn't work as films for me, I had no real feelings of engagement with them.

I agree with Yellow, I grew up too. I think I could only be bothered to watch The Empire Strikes Back if I had to watch one as I remember that one being the best of what I have seen. In fact if I was going to watch a kids sci-fi film from that era I think I would rather watch The Black Hole, puts on flame suite.

Also, and I don't expect Mr Paul to agree so wholeheartedly with this, once Harrison Ford wasn't in it, some of the interest waned.... ;)
