What went wrong with Star Wars?

Well Ronald Reagan was a muppet to start with, the entire project was far too expensive and pie in the sky.

Indeed. Talk about rewriting history!

This is where it really went wrong, second guessing decisions you made back when you were younger. I don't have any problems with updating special effects, I remember seeing interviews with him back then when he said he was never really happy with the effects but it was the best he could do. They seemed amazing to me but at least that was consistent, changing Han to shoot last is rewriting, Lucas said it made Han seemed mercenary. News flash, he was a spice smuggler and an outlaw in a dangerous place, and changing him now lessens his redemption IMO (and makes him a bit stupid when someone is pointing a gun at him).

In the same vein of people losing their way, I saw an interview with Spielberg about Close Encounters and how he would do it different now. Being a father himself, he couldn't make the Richard Dreyfuss's character leave his kids now, maybe its just me but without THAT, there is no emotion, the whole point is his single minded obsession with the aliens after his close encounter. Maybe he also forgot that the character isn't acting entirely of his own free will either.

He was awful. Totally miscast. He can't do accents and his beard was horrible.

What went wrong? They didn't leave it at 3.

I seem to remember from school, about the time of the first film, that there was a rumour that there was going to be three episodes in the current series, then they'd go back in time and do three series about the previous generation. Then there was another rumour that after that there'd be another three series about the next generation. This sounded fantastic news at eleven years old.

I agree with Yellow, I grew up too. I think I could only be bothered to watch The Empire Strikes Back if I had to watch one as I remember that one being the best of what I have seen.

I've never watched this one all the way through, but I think I would have been disgusted when Darth Vader was revealed to be Luke Skywalker's father. I was almost as disgusted when Princess Leia turned out to be Luke's sister. It turned the series into a soapy melodrama. It would have been much more interesting to keep to the original friend betrayal idea, IMO.

Another thing I didn't like was all the levitation and telekinesis that being an adept of the force gave its adherents: jumping impossible heights, moving stuff around without touching them, and throwing electricity bolts at each other. I preferred it when being strong in force just gave you great skill with a light sabre with maybe a bit of mind control.

I'm sure i read this somewhere at the time. You, YF, are the only person, other than myself, who has ever mentioned it since. Everyone else has had their memories erased.

I didn't see a Star Wars film until Empire, but I knew about the prequels etc. After all, Star Wars was always called Episode 4.

I remember that rumour circulating when I was at primary/early secondary school too (1980ish). Same rumour, that George Lucas had three earlier films and three later films written. Reality is, I suspect, he had a back story with quite a bit of vaguery to it, and a more vague idea for future sequels.
There is lots of 'canonical' but non-film material about the star wars universe, as I spent a bored sunday perusing on a star wars wiki, which takes the story far into the future.

An endearing spoof of the Star Wars films, made by Star Wars enthusiasts. Made their own costumes and sets and everything. It must have taken them ages.

Ah! I haven't seen their The Emperor's New Clones yet! Great title!
