What would you take with you when evacuating a plane on fire?

The photos of the BA flight that had an engine fire on the runway at Las Vegas appear to show people running away from the plane, having evacuated down the emergency slides, carrying bags with them, in one case apparently a shouder bag plus a cabin bag. Stupid or selfish or both?

Well, once they're off the plane, they have to make plans for the next part of their lives. And they can't do that without their belongings. I'd ont see what the problem is.

/sarcasm.

I thought this myself. They should be prosecuted for reckless endangerment or whatever. 14 people were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Some may have been smoke inhalation, but I'd bet some were twisted ankles or similar whilst scrambling to get out because some morons decided they need their hand luggage.

Agreed - plus each and every split second longer taken exiting the plane because your bag catches on a seat or whatever is one more passenger behind you suffering smoke inhallation or, potentially, burns.

I don't see why a fire on a plane should mean I lose my Victoria Se...I mean CK underwear.

The nicest looking Louis Vuitton or Gucci bag I saw someone load up.

*joking*

I imagine people might not want the faff of an incinerated passport, tickets or wallet while in a foreign country but not convinced that is a good enough excuse to delay getting off a smoking aircraft.

When I travel on business I carry a wallet for my cash, cards and passport so I would certainly take that if it was within reach. My phone is usually in my pocket on shorter flights.

NB: The engine that caught fire was a General Electric, not Rolls-Royce. Phew.
