On another forum, I just got the following message -

Hi Mate.

I’ve been a member of this forum for a number of years now and was looking to see if you could do me a favour in return for a free pair of cycling sunglasses.

I am the owner of ****** *****s Sunglasses.

Can you go on to our Facebook page ( ****** *****s Eyewear) and like the page, then drop me a personal message so that I know who you are and I can drop you a message to get your free sunglasses.

Appreciate your help.

I don't do Facebook but I do have an account for the family Messenger thingy so I could go look at his page but is this a scam? Am I being unduly cautious?

If you're asking the question then I reckon you know the answer. I'd be hearing alarm bells as soon as someone called me "mate" !

Likes/shares on social media are good exposure for small brands, and giving away a few free pairs of sunnies could be cheaper than paying for traditional advertising, so it could plausibly be legitimate.

I would make a judgment based on how well I knew/trusted the person making the offer.

Basically, if you like a page, it's easier for them to advertise to your friends. Many cyclists are facebook-friends of many other cyclists so it's a cheap way of getting an audience with a higher proportion of cyclists. I doubt that would be worth free subglasses so I suspect that they might be intending to sell the resulting page to other cycling-related advertisers.

Look for something like "connection targetting" in the online help at

(unless they've renamed it recently).

Ignore. The 'I've been a member of this forum for a number of years now' means I've been trying to scam people on here for many years now. Of course, there's a chance he could be genuine but a high chance he's as fake as Joey Essex's tan
