What's the point of cats?

Is it just me or are cats shoot? What is their purpose? A dog might rescue its owners from a fire by alerting them at night while a cat would run away and find another soft touch to take it in. We got one as we were starting to get field mice coming in but the cat is bone idle and I fail to see what it gives us back for the constant take, take, take. We lost it over the weekend and I've just found it on the other side of the garden fence whining and too stupid to realise it could turn round and walk out of the bush it had become trapped in. I was hoping we'd seen the last of it but no. I feel cats have become superfluous to requirements in the 21st century and unless anyone can tell me what earthly good they are, I'm going to propose a mass cull.

Seconded. They are counter-productive. They consume money, affection and resounces that could be better used elsewhere and piss off everyone except their owners. I think the world would better off without them.

Anyone who thinks differently, I'd strongly recommend a film called "The sailor who fell from grace with the sea" which made a big impression on me when I was a youngster. See if you still ike cats at the end of that!

oooh.. let's see. Well, the real Waffles - the one that's pictured in my avatar, has a very strong bond with me. During a chronic and nasty illness, she 'nursed' me. Being effectively bedridden for the best part of a year, was not pleasant at all. One of the few things of solace to me was the fact that the then young Waffles only left my side to use the littertray and have food/water. She would immediately return having seen to her 'needs'. If suring that short time, someone closed the bedroom door, Waffles would sit by the door quietly ('holding vigil' as MrWC used to term it) until someone came along to open the door and let her back into the room where I was. Her gentle purrs were the only sound I could bear when I was in pain, chronic pain, and a true solace to me.

Here, stick it in your care plan.

Whilst not a cat fan, might I just mention to those that might want to make an anti-cat rant post that Noodley (whom I consider one of my oldest and dearest 'Friends' here in cyberspace) has just had his eldest cat run over. This might not be the best time for such a post.
As you were.

My pal's cats entertained me last Thursday by crapping in his bath.

He found an excuse for their behaviour by saying that they'd been upset by their visit to the vets earlier in the day.

I saw the event as a good excuse to give them away/have them put down but he maintained dignified silence on the matter.

FWIW cat poo, and lots of it, stinks to high even in a confined space.

Cats exist solely to lord it over their human underlings, watching on sarcastically as we jump when bidden, coo when purred at and feed them on demand. Cats are mercurial, deceitful and essentially wild.

Dogs, on the other hand, offer unconditional love and devotion. The are predicatable, domesticated and ultimately boring.

Dogs will sleep soundly at the bottom of your bed, loyally protecting you - cats will jump on your head at 4 in the morning and steal your pillow.

If cats were a '60s band, they would be the Rolling Stones. Dogs, on the other hand, would be Freddie and the Dreamers.

I have two cats. Between them they have 7 legs, 4 eyes and 2 peanuts!

That is my seat they have stolen, by the way...
