fare point but just because it is a bit posh and pricey does not stop it being a pit

Good point, too! But incorrect in this case.

Billericay high street has some fine old buildings; it's just the modern and built-up area around it that lowers the tone a bit.

Definitely not a dump, though.

How about Billericay

Billericay's ok.

Beats Basildon. Which to be fair has some decent shopping (if you like that sort of thing).

Ambleside.

It reflects so much that is bad about contemporary life and tries to hide it under a veneer of being 'in the Lake District'. It's a traffic dominated, scruffy place with no heart, that has been given over to shopping. The housing market is distorted by second homes and the only thing that gave it any vitality (students from the college) will end when they move to another University of Cumbria campus at Penrith, so the attractive buildings in the town can be sold.

Shopping, greed, traffic, second homes, over hyped attractions. I feel sorry for the tourists who wander around trying to find what they are there 'for'.

Oh yes, and you can't get any tea or food after about 4.15 because all the cafes are closing. Never mind that hundreds are retuning from their day's activities about then.

That is where I am from:tongue:

Then you would know!

On the plus side, a 20 year old blonde who got off at Basildon decided last week to play footsie with me on the train.:tongue::blush:
